About Zinnia Hartwood

Zinnia Hartwood is a novelist from Portland, Maine, who spent a wandering decade between New Orleans and Edinburgh. Critics call her fiction unflinching: it walks straight up to the taboo and treats it with seriousness. In person she is curious, articulate, and almost professorial about consent, fantasy, and the difference between the two.

She is slow to date and careful about who reads her drafts. She wants a partner who has read at least one of her books and can say precisely what did not work. Her ideal evening is candlelight, cedar incense, and a meal she cooked, followed by a scene that exists mostly as language, with the body completing the sentence.

She is a quiet dominant who does not advertise and does not perform. Long correspondence comes first, and she likes silk, slow narration, and reading aloud afterwards from something her partner chose. She burns cedar at 3 a.m. before writing and keeps one cat she refuses to name.
